Former DEA agent John Marquez brings gritty investigative techniques and a clouded past to his role as head of a special operations unit of the California Department of Fish and Game. In the second thrilling case of this masterful series, Marquez and his team's cover is blown, leaving him caught between a ruthless band of bear poachers, a corrupt local game warden, and a county detective obsessed with a murderer-at-large. Meanwhile, Marquez's own fragile family is left wide open to mortal danger. Night Game hits hard and moves fast toward a finish that ricochets through wilderness, backwoods towns, and the darker recesses of greed.

Night Game A John Marquez Novel John Marquez Crime Novels Book 2 edition by Kirk Russell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

I really enjoyed Shell Games, Russell's first book in this trilogy, but I like Night Game at least twice as much. His development of hero John Marquez is the main reason, especially the psychology that compels him to place himself at risk again and again. The author uses point-of-view narration to excellent effect. There are lots of other compelling characters here, too, perhaps most notably Sophie, an almost a feral woman in tune with violence and sex and able to use them to her advantage to gain power over a life that has left her powerless.

The plot deals with a ring that captures wild bears and holds them in cages to milk their bile, which is worth a fortune on the black market because of its uses in traditional Asian medicine. Russell slowly (and without preaching) builds the case for why this activity is unnatural and should be prosecuted. I also like the noir element that few people seem to care besides Marquez and his team; his undercover unit's budget is continually being cut, and poaching charges are often bargained away to get to something "more serious." I also find it fascinating that these illicit animal products tie into brutal, global crime rings because the products bring such a high price.

As an avid hiker/mountain guy, I loved spending a book's worth of time in the backcountry around Placerville, Calif., through Russell's beautiful description and narration.

The book's just fantastic. I bought this one for my father-in-law for Christmas.

Night Game A John Marquez Novel John Marquez Crime Novels Book 2 edition by Kirk Russell Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

The 2nd book in the series was not as good as the first and took me longer to get through. Choppy, jumped around and introduced to many characters, that didn't all evolve as they should. I will try one more in the series to see how it pans out.
I thoroughly and completely enjoyed this novel. It is rare for me to find a new author that I MUST read, and lan to follow Mr. Russell on his future endeavors. I knew nothing about abalone prior to reading this novel, other than their beauiful shells, and the author quickly sucked me in, giving enough information about the abalone, while not beating the reader over the head, or making the facts so dry, they pull you out of the story. It is definately worth your time, and money, to give this author a try.i can only hope there will be additional John Marquez mysteries in the future!
Lots of good hard detective work, with twists that make you wonder what's comming next. My only objection is that Russell gets so many players in the cast it is sometimes hard to keep them all straight. Entertaining though. Will definitely read the next one in the series.
A very interesting group of characters. A very low key team of heroes investigating a very serious continuous crime. I foung it riviting in many spots and in others, I wished the author would get to the point. But, regardless the story comes together and the end is not surprising. It hust took a long time getting there. Needless to say I did like the book.
I like that the relationship with the stepdaughter is developing in a nice way. Never knew the problem of poaching bears for that purpose. Again. Russell's purpose to inform as well as entertain. The characters in this one were believable, as were the ones in Dead Game. A comfortable read. But easy to put down and come back to ... maybe a couple of days later.
I've just started the book, after enjoying the previous book in the series. It seems good so far, but I'm highly irritated by all the hyphenated words. I'm not talking about regularly hyphenated words; but words that should never be hyphenated, except if they are at the end of the line. These are not; they're just regular words in the middle of the text. Very annoying.
The pace that Kirk Russell sets is, I think, unique and works with the plot and characters to create a realistic environment. I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading other Russell works. This is the third or fourth book of his that I've read. The "Game" stories follow a similar theme as they are depicting a specific character. Another of his novels I read, was completely different, yet it too was unique, as was the flow.
